There are three main types of mini blinds on the market today: wood blinds, vinyl or metal blinds and cloth or fabric blinds. And each collects dust like magnets on a daily basis. If you suffer from allergies, you know that cleaning blinds is an important weekly ritual, so here are some tips on the best way to clean mini blinds.
Weather you have cheap mini blinds or top of the line, custom made blinds, these are the easiest and best way to clean them.
Wood blinds – you do not want to use soap and water on these for the water will cause the wood to soak in the water and warp and ruin the blinds. Purchase a terry cloth wash cloth or a glove specially made for cleaning blinds and a furniture polish. Do not spray the polish directly on the wood, this, too, will ruin the wood. Spray the polish on your terry cloth or on your gloved hand and run it over each slat. The furniture polish will help to repel future dust for a longer period of time than would just dry dusting.
Vinyl or metal blinds – these are the easiest of all to clean. The best way to clean these mini blinds is with dish soap and water. Again, take a terry cloth square or the specially made glove and dunk it into the soapy water. Make sure to ring out the excess water because you don’t want puddles everywhere. Clean each slat, top and bottom, getting into the cracks and where the cords meet the metal or vinyl if possible. This is were dirt hides. When you are finished, take a dry terry cloth and dry each slat.
Cloth or fabric blinds – are the hardest to clean and you might want to have a professional perform this cleaning job, especially if they are stained. If you feel comfortable tackling this job, then do so with a vacuum cleaner with attachments. Do not use soap and water. Wherever the vacuum cannot reach, use your terry cloth or glove to get the dirt, this would probably be hiding inside the pockets where the slats are covered by the material.
Some other ways to consider when wanting to clean your mini blinds is a statically charged duster which captures the dust, but again, be careful not to push the dust into the cord area.
If you have a lot of dust and build up on your mini blinds, you might want to consult a professional. Today’s technology uses something called sonic cleaning. This is a high pitched, but silent to humans, sound wave directed at the mini blinds that removes the dirt and dust.
There are cheep mini blinds and expensive mini blinds on the market today. No matter which you choose for your home, both need constant care. Remember, not too much water, try to stay away from the cords and the openings where the cords go into and you will have the best looking mini blinds on the block!
