Vertical blinds can help a room by lengthening a window. Just like a person who wears strips going down to appear slimmer, a vertical blind can do the same for a window that is wider than it is taller. And since these vertical blinds slide from side to side, you can control the amount of sunlight that filters into the room.

If you now own horizontal blinds and want to use replacement vertical blinds, start by calling your local retailer about vertical blinds. Some custom stores will send someone out to your home to assess the situation and recommend the correct replacement vertical blinds for your windows. They will also measure the windows so you get the correct size. They can show you samples of the material, such as vinyl, real wood blinds, faux wood blinds or fabric blinds. The choice is up to you.

If blinds are not your thing, than maybe curtains would be a better match for your rooms. There are more curtain retailers and a wider variety of choices when it comes to discount curtains. However, you don't have to be stuck with what's on the shelf at your local discount store. There are many window stores that specialize in custom window coverings such as discount curtains. They can come to your house and show you samples of material that would go with your décor or you can bring in a sample piece of your color scheme, such as a pillow case from the bedroom or a snippet of material cut from underneath your couch.

Many homes now have patio doors and the need for privacy is growing. Vertical blinds work well as patio door blinds. Patio doors are taller than they are wider in this case, but horizontal blinds would be too small for such large doors. Patio door blinds should be vertical and can be any number of styles, the real wood, the faux wood or fabric or vinyl. Just keep in mind if you use your patio door a lot, you will need to clean the blinds more often.

Depending on what type they are, there are a number of ways to clean your vertical blinds. If you have vinyl vertical blinds, you can use a rubber sponge, found at the hardware store. This also works well on fabric vertical blinds, but remember, brush downward with the slats, or the may come unhooked if you brush upwards. 

Vacuuming and a lamb's wool duster work wonders on vertical blinds, both the wood vertical blinds and vinyl. When it comes to the fabric, vacuuming works the best, but again, downward only.

Soap and water works well on wood and vinyl, only if used sparingly. Never soak the slats; it might cause them to warp.
